Première: Europe’s Biggest Lie NL, Tata Steel IJmuiden

Om te kunnen leven hebben we schone lucht, schoon water en een veilige en gezonde leefomgeving nodig. Helaas vervuilt de staalfabriek al meer dan een eeuw de wijde omgeving. Negenduizend werknemers en 160.000 omwonenden betalen daarvoor met hun gezondheid. De overheid heeft decennialang dit bedrijf teveel ruimte gegeven en faalt in het beschermen van mens, dier én natuur. Banen en winst wegen zwaarder dan gezondheid en een veilige leefomgeving. Te lang domineert het korte-termijn denken, met desastreuze gevolgen van dien.

Veel omwonenden en tal van organisaties, gesteund door experts en advocaten, hebben hun krachten gebundeld om Tata Steel aansprakelijk te stellen. In “Europe’s Biggest Lie” word je meegenomen in de wereld rondom Tata Steel en de problemen die de staalgigant veroorzaakt. Decennialange vervuiling en gezondheidsschade hebben geleid tot groot verzet van betrokken burgers. Na de documentaire praten we met verschillende experts en activisten, die deze leugen de wereld uit willen helpen:

• Ellen Windemuth, een hedendaagse Jeanne d’Arc en CEO van WaterBear Network. Ellen is de bedenker en producer van Europe’s Biggest Lie. Ze woonde in Wijk aan Zee en moest vluchten vanwege de impact van Tata Steel op haar gezondheid. Ellen is o.a. bekend van de film: My Octopus Teacher. NB WaterBear is ’s werelds eerste streaming platform gewijd aan de toekomst van onze planeet.
• Bénédicte Ficq, de bekende strafrechtadvocaat in de zaak tegen Tata Steel. Sinds zij (groeps)aangifte deed tegen Tata Steel is de geest definitief uit de fles. Hierdoor kreeg de jarenlange strijd van velen een gezicht en enorme slagkracht. Bénédicte vertelt over wat haar beweegt, de diepere reden waarom ze voor deze zaak koos en over hoe deze zaak een precedentwerking heeft op andere bestuurders van grote vervuilers.
• Luc Verkouteren, huisarts in IJmuiden, wonend in de IJmond. De huisarts vertelt over de impact van Tata op de gezondheid. Tot nu toe is hij de enige huisarts in de regio die hardop durft te spreken over de gezondheidsschade van de staalfabriek. Luc windt geen doekjes om de zaak en schetst haarscherp wat het effect is van de uitstoot van Tata Steel.
• Jacob de Boer, hoogleraar Milieuchemie en Toxicologie aan de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij is als een luis in de pels van vervuilende industriereuzen en vertelt over het effecten van de giftige stoffen die uit de schoorstenen van de staalfabriek komen. Jacob de Boer weet daarnaast ook alles over ‘the forever chemical’ PFAS. Jacob de Boer en Thomas Goorden (B) zijn beide hoofdrolspelers in de spraakmakende 3M PFAS-zaak in België. Een van de volgende afleveringen ‘Europe’s Biggest Lie’ gaat over de PFAS affaire.
• Thomas Goorden is milieu-activist, burgerlobbyist en communicatiespecialist bij LEF . Hij is de klokkenluider van het PFAS-schandaal in België. Op zijn Twitter account noemt hij zichzelf “Een halve zachte, die het in zijn hoofd heeft gehaald om de bedreigde natuur te gaan redden.” Thomas woont in Antwerpen. Tussen alles door schrijft hij aan “Alles komt goed”, een thriller over het PFAS-schandaal; een regelrechte catastrofe voor dier en mens, voor de Westerschelde, de Noordzee en de (leef)gebieden eromheen.
• Valéry Bosch toont haar liefde voor water in haar werk als voorzitter van Surfrider Foundation Netherlands en als transitiemanager “Water” bij VanWaarde. Ook is ze helemaal in haar element als ze met haar surfboard of zeilboot in het water ligt. Valéry is eco-entrepreneur en vanuit de wieg al wereldverbeteraar.
• Antoinette Verbrugge, activist en burgerlobbyist, zij knipt het lint door van het crowdfundingplatform. Ooit sprong ze in het diepe toen ze als eerste aangifte deed bij de politie in Beverwijk, tegen de ziekmakende praktijken van Tata Steel en tegen de verantwoordelijke leiding van de staalfabriek. “Iemand moest de eerste zijn. Amper twee weken later zaten Sanne en ik bij strafadvocaat Bénédicte Ficq om haar te vragen of zij de grote vervuiler wilde aanpakken. Groot was de opluchting op het moment dat la Ficq ons aankeek en JA-zei omdat ze wist dat we een zaak hadden!” De aangifte leidde tot een opstand van burgers. Sámen krijg je zaken voor elkaar, die in je eentje onmogelijk lijken.
• Jaap Boots, zanger, man met gitaar, dichter, schrijver. Woont in Amsterdam, geboren in Bergen NH. Zijn laatste cd is Terug Naar Zee, waarop hij zijn liefde voor de Noord-Hollandse kust bezingt. Zijn nieuwe dichtbundel ‘Bambalam’ (30 Rockgedichten) is net verschenen.

A documentary produced by WaterBear Network about Tata Steel and the enormous impact of that steel factory in the middle of one of the most densely populated areas of the Netherlands. What does that mean for residents, employees, bathers, athletes, animals, dunes and the rest of nature?

In order to live, we need clean air, clean water and a safe and healthy living environment. Unfortunately, the steel factory has been polluting the wider area for more than a century. Nine thousand employees and 160,000 local residents are paying the price with their health. For decades, the government has given this company too much space and is failing to protect people, animals and nature. Jobs and profit outweigh health and a safe living environment. For too long short-term thinking dominates, with disastrous consequences.

Many local residents and numerous organisations, supported by experts and lawyers, have joined forces to hold Tata Steel accountable. In “ Europes Biggest Lie” you will be taken into the world around Tata Steel and the problems caused by the steel giant. Decades of pollution and health damage have led to strong opposition from concerned citizens. After the documentary, we talk to several experts and activists who want to get this lie out of the world:

Speakers:

• Ellen Windemuth , a modern-day Joan of Arc and CEO of WaterBear Network. Ellen is the creator and producer of Europe’s Biggest Lie. She lived in Wijk aan Zee and had to flee because of the impact of Tata Steel on her health. Ellen is known for the film: My Octopus Teacher. WaterBear is the world’s first streaming platform dedicated to the future of our planet.
• Benedicte Ficq , the well-known criminal defense lawyer in the case against Tata Steel. Since she filed a ( group ) complaint against Tata Steel, the genie has been definitively left the bottle. This gave many years of fighting a face and enormous momentum. Bénédicte talks about what moves her, the deeper reason why she chose this case and how this case sets a precedent for other drivers of large polluters.
• Luc Verkouteren , general practitioner in IJmuiden, living in the IJmond. The GP talks about the impact of Tata on health. So far, he is the only general practitioner in the region who dares to speak out loud about the damage to health due to the steel factory. Luc does not mind strong wording and outlines very sharply the effect of Tata Steel’s emissions.
• Jacob de Boer, professor of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology at the Free University of Amsterdam. He is like a flee in the fur of polluting industrial giants and talks about the effects of the toxic substances that come from the chimneys of the steel factory and water outfalls. Jacob de Boer also knows everything about ’the forever chemical ‘PFAS. Jacob de Boer and Thomas Goorden are both key players in the high-profile 3M PFAS case in Belgium. One of the next episodes ‘ Europe’s Biggest Lie’ is about the PFAS affair .
• Thomas Goorden is an environmental activist , citizen lobbyist and communications specialist at LEF . He is the whistleblower of the PFAS scandal in Belgium. On his Twitter account , he calls himself “A half soft man, who got it into his head to save endangered nature.” Thomas lives in Antwerp. In between everything he writes a book named “Everything will be fine”, a thriller about the PFAS scandal; an outright catastrophe for animals and humans, for the Western Scheldt, the North Sea and the surrounding habitats.
• Valéry Bosch shows her love for water in her work as chairman of Surfrider Foundation Netherlands and as transition manager “Water” at Van Waarde . She is also completely in her element when she is in the water with her surfboard or sailboat. Valéry is an eco -entrepreneur and an activist from the cradle.
• Antoinette Verbrugge , activist and citizen lobbyist, she cuts the ribbon of the crowdfunding platform . She once jumped into the deep end when she was the first to report to the police in Beverwijk against the sickening practices of Tata Steel and against the responsible management of the steel factory. “Someone had to be the first. Barely two weeks later, Sanne and I were with criminal lawyer Bénédicte Ficq to ask her if she wanted to tackle the big polluter. We were relieved when Ficq looked at us and said YES because she knew we had a case!” The report sparked a civil revolt. Together you can accomplish things that seem impossible on your own.
• Jaap Boots , singer, man with guitar, poet, writer. Lives in Amsterdam, born in Bergen NH. His latest album is Back To The Sea, on which he sings about his love for the Northern Dutch coast. His new collection of poetry ‘Bambalam’ (30 Rock Poems) has just been published.
