For one night only, the Fifth Friday Sisterhood is going to dare to dare. We are going to take over a space in Pakhuis de Zwijger during the Week Against Racism and temporarily create a small ‘Island Nation’ called the FFS…yes, it’s our logo…! Our main aim during the occupation of the space is: we shall screen a radical feature film called Neptune Frost.
This film is a thrilling anti-colonial sci-fi musical made by Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman. After the screening of the film, we shall invite the entire audience to take part in a game called ‘Your Right to Speak’. Each and every one of the individuals that have seen the film get the right to tell us if they found anything relevant to them as a person in this movie, or just what they think this film is about, or how it makes them feel and if what they have seen, spoke to them in any way.
Background film Neptune Frost
In the hilltops of Burundi a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region’s natural resources and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry.

Background Fifth Friday Sisterhood
Members of the Sisterhood have been moderating movies, discussions and panels for decades, we have the reputation of “training” many Institutions, Organisations, NGO’s, Companies, Groups in Public Speaking, Storytelling, etc. We believe the present models used to create discussions and debates, are no longer valid in the 21st century and do not allow the growth of language needed to address modern intersectionality meaningfully, and mostly caters to the educated privileged.
So we are going to try an experiment and give the space over to the audience as much as possible, within the limitations of the time we have of course, and see if we can grow a new normal, a more inclusive way in communicating with each other, together. Come and join us in this crazy ad-venture. Why…?
The Sisterhood has come to the conclusion that: “visual culture” is now so developed around us all, that we can use it as language, a gif or meme or emoji and avatar, speak to many of us today, no matter who we are, or where we come from, or identify as. Signs and symbolism have taken on new meanings in this new Century and filming and videos enrich our daily lives more and more. Film makers are becoming more critical and new platforms are giving rise to greater and wider individual choices. The power of visual storytelling is becoming a standard norm to explain the world around us. No more so than the film Neptune Frost, it’s a fearless fantastical attempt to make an all encompassing, all inclusive, all Genre, magical movie. Is it the part of the holy Grail of us moving forward, or is it a Pandora’s Box that shall unleash chaos and even more confusion?
