For this keynote session, we are glad to feature presentations by Laura Forlano, Fulbright award-winning and National Science Foundation-funded scholar, writer, social scientist and design researcher, and Andrea Polli, environmental artist working at the intersection of art, science and technology.

Their presentations will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Nanna Verhoef, Professor of Screen Cultures & Society in the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University; Dave Colangelo, artist, educator, and researcher based in Toronto, and Martijn de Waal, Professor at the research group of Civic Interaction Design at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and MAB20 General Chair.

Laura Folano: Making Critical (More-than-human) Futures
How do we imagine, design, use and maintain digital technologies in ways that allow all lives — human and non-human — to flourish? The answer to this question requires new understandings of what it means to be human, new conceptualizations of knowledge and expertise, new inventive methodologies as well as new ethical and political concepts.

Andrea Polli: Hack the GridPolli
Polli will present Hack the Grid, excerpts from her book and series of projects designed to advance the original definition of “hacking”: to make something your own. Hack the Grid employs public light and energy artworks in the built environment and community engagement to promote greater understanding of energy production and consumption. Through this, she encourages audiences to experiment with energy-related technologies and ideas, to make more informed choices about energy consumption and advocate for greener energy industries.
