In Uncovering Creatives we cover the stories of creative frontrunners. Jennifer (AKA The Naked MC) Muntslag talks for an hour with our guests about making, entrepreneurship, (creative) identity, and social themes. This evening we welcome Darwin Winklaar and Cherella Gessel.
Darwin Winklaar is a unique and talented young fashion designer. The multidisciplinary artist uses embodied storytelling, music, dance and singing to decolonize and convey his artistic practice. Winklaar reintroduces a new genre informed by his Aruban roots: Neo-Folklorism. He graduated in 2020 in fashion design at Gerrit-Rietveld Academie and his summer he won the Lichting 2020 fashion award for most promising fashion designer of his year’s graduates. Darwin Winklaar’s work is based on the notion of “altarismo”, a concept which shaped most of the artists’ upbringing.
Cherella Gessel is a multidiciplinary performing artist. She is an artist in the broadest sense of the word; she works as a mime-player, dancer, model, theatre producer, spoken-word artist and filmmaker. The work of Cherella always comes from her own frame of reference and is based on her personal interests. In 2014 she started with acting, and at that time she began by making loose bits of theatre that became part of various bigger performances of platforms like Studio West, Bijlmerparktheatre, DOX e.a. In 2020 she made a show YONIVERSE, a performance that could be seen as a love letter to herself. With all that she is creating it is not a wonder she has been nominated for the Amsterdamprijs of 2021.
Ruby Lee van Hoorn is the founder of Cream Ceramics. With this brand she’s experimenting with nerikomi ceramics. During the lockdown she fell in love with the technique and spent a lot of time creating her own signature. Soon she will launch her first collection of handcrafted ceramics all designed, baked and glazed in Amsterdam. Tonight she will give us a first peek of Cream Ceramics.
Following the shows and performances in September’20 Amsterdam Fashion Week presented Lichting 2020 on the 6th of July 2021 at the Hermitage Amsterdam. The fourteen best graduates of the seven Dutch fashion academies presented themselves and their work to a (inter)national jury. Lichting 2020 was the first of its kind; the changing fashion education, and therefore more innovative graduation work, allow us to change the concept of Lichting for the first time...
