Over de Easter school
Hoe was het hier, in de zogenoemde ‘buitenwijk’ of ‘achterstandswijk’, in de jaren negentig en begin van het millennium? Waarom kwamen de nieuwe bewoners in 1998 in opstand? Wat is er daarna gebeurd en welke richting moet het stadsdeel op?
Het lectoraat Sociale Rechtvaardigheid en Diversiteit in de Kunsten zal zich op 29/30/31 maart in een driedaags collectief onderzoek verdiepen in de pijnpunten van de woongeschiedenis van Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
Onder leiding van de onderzoekers van Aminata Cairo, Tayfun Balçik, Rosa te Velde, Camiël Kesser en Paulina Trejo Méndez doet het lectoraat een oefening in collectief herinneren, bewegen en dialoog.
Hoe ervaren en doorleven de oude en nieuwe bewoners gentrificatie? Wat zijn de copingmechanismen voor bijvoorbeeld de sloop en verkoop van sociale huurwoningen? Is er ooit publiekelijke erkenning gekomen voor de concentratie van Amsterdammers met een migratieachtergrond in buurten buiten de ring, oftewel hoe voelt het om een ‘niet-westerse allochtoon’ te zijn?
Tijdens deze Paasschool gaan we gezamenlijk onderzoek doen naar deze vragen. We zullen gebruik maken van de kaders voor het doen van ‘sociaal rechtvaardig’ onderzoek zoals de IPT en de 5 pilaren, evenals de story circle-methode. Daarnaast zullen we ‘social mapping’ gebruiken om gezamenlijk de kwesties van gentrificatie in deze buurt te onderzoeken en deze verhalen met elkaar te verweven.
We nodigen iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de strijd tegen gentrificatie uit om zich bij ons onderzoek aan te sluiten, vooral: kunstenaars, studenten, activisten en mensen die in Nieuw-West wonen.

About the Easter school
What was it like here, in the so-called ‘suburb’ or ‘deprived neighborhood’, in the nineties and the beginning of the millennium? Why did the residents revolt in 1998? What happened next and what direction should Nieuw-West take?
On March 29/30/31, the Social Justice and Diversity in the Arts lectorate will delve into the pain points of the housing history of Amsterdam Nieuw-West during a three-day collective research.
Led by researchers Aminata Cairo, Tayfun Balçik, Rosa te Velde, Camiël Kesser and Paulina Trejo Méndez, the lectorate is conducting an exercise in collective remembering, movement and dialogue.
How do old and new residents experience and live through gentrification? What are the coping mechanisms for, for example, the demolition and selling off of social housing? Has there ever been public recognition for the concentration of Amsterdam residents with a migration background in neighborhoods outside the ring, or in other words, what does it feel like to be a ‘non-Western immigrant’?
During this Easter school we will collectively conduct research into these questions. We will use the frameworks for conducting ‘socially just’ research such as the IPT and the 5 pillars as well as the story circle method used and developed by the SJDA lectorate. In addition, we will use social mapping to collectively explore the issues of gentrification in this neighbourhood and weave stories together.
We invite anyone interested in the fight against gentrification to join our research, especially: artists, students, activists as well as people living in Nieuw-West.
